30 November 2015 – From the 30th of November to 4th of December 2015, the Union of African Population Studies (UAPS) and the Government of the Republic of South Africa hosted the 7th African Population Conference in Pretoria, South Africa.

This year, the theme of the African Population Conference was “Demographic Dividend in Africa: Prospects, Opportunities, and Challenges”.  The conference included a number of sessions on themes related to the demographic dividend.

Prior to the start of the conference, on November 29, PRB, UNFPA, and UAPS held a day-long workshop on the demographic dividend for journalists and communication professionals from across sub Saharan Africa.  Participants learned about the key concepts of the demographic dividend and to consider its relevance to local, national, and international news. They also discussed the media’s role as watchdog, to be able to report on issues relevant to the demographic dividend and its progress.
